What is Radiant (Hydronic) Heating?
Radiant (Hydronic) Heating is not a new concept, in fact it quite ancient. Centuries ago the Greeks and Romans realized that heat rises and put the theory to work for them. They heated the floors of their housing structures by forcing hot air under the floors. The architect Frank Lloyd Wright also ran hot water pipes throughout the floors of his many structures back in the 1930's. Now, over 2000 years later, the principle still applies: the best way of warming a room is to heat the floor rather than to try and make heat travel sideways from a radiator, baseboard heater or air register. This application is so common in Europe that over 50% of all newly constructed buildings are equipped with a radiant floor heating application.
How does Radiant (Hydronic) Heating work?
Radiant Heating provides whole floor comfort, quiet operation, eliminates drafts and dust problems from forced air and is invisible, no registers or radiators. Radiant floor heating is simple, it works by using the floor as a giant radiator. Tubes are embedded into the concrete during floor construction and warm water is pumped through the slab's network of tubes to warm the floor. The warm floor then radiates to all objects in the room. To help lower the energy costs to heat a floor a solar thermal system can be added. Solar thermal systems are complementary to radiantly heated floors, the warm water they produce can be used for to heat the floor. Helping you feel warm and comfortable at a lower cost!
